My Teaching Experience |

EIL (English as an International Language) Student Teacher
Brigham Young University-Hawaii ? Laie, Hawaii ? Fall/ 2003
Responsibilities:
- Taught a 3 credit EIL Advanced I - listening/speaking course to 20 students
- Taught a 2 credit EIL Advanced I - Writing writing course to 20 students
- Followed syllabi, lesson plans, and exams for the courses
- Responsible for some of the classes, lesson plans, and meetings with my sponsor teacher
- Maintained classroom control and positive rapport
Having the opportunity to be an student teacher in the EIL program at Brigham Young University-Hawaii was an excellent opportunity to be more fully submerged in the teaching experience. Although I was assigned a mentor as someone I could refer to, I was given greater responsibilities that I learned to handle independently. It was important for me to be organized and well prepared for class each day. I learned skills such as grading, handing behavioral problems, motivating students, adapting materials to students' needs, assessing student proficiency and progression, and creating valid and reliable exams. My favorite part of teaching in the EIL program was the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with my students who were from all corners of the earth: Cambodia, China, Tahiti, Japan, Tonga, Indonesia, Mongolia, Korea, Kiribati, the Salomon Islands, Pakistan, Dominican Republic, and Kiribas. |

Writing students / Winter 2002 |
Listening/Speaking and Writing/ Reading English as an International Language Tutor
Brigham Young University-Hawaii ? Laie, Hawaii ? Aug/02-Oct/03
Responsibilities:
- Tutored EIL students currently enrolled in listening/speaking and writing/reading classes
- Met with students either in small groups or on an individual basis, 100 total
- Helped students improve with various listening/speaking and writing/ reading skills such as conversation, oral presentations, listening comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, nd oral grammar, essays, grammar, etc.
- Implemented the tutoring classes in the student dorms.
As an EIL tutor, I had the privilege to get to know international students on a more individual basis and to help them obtain the kind of assistance they couldn't get in the classroom. Listening/speaking instructors often provided me with materials that I could use with the students, but many times I had the opportunity of creating discussions and materials on my own to facilitate students' learning experience. Focusing on spoken fluency also helped me develop a deeper knowledge of pronunciation and the pragmatics of language. Through tutoring in smaller groups, I learned a great deal about other cultures and how to better work with and understand the diverse peoples of the world. |

I learned the following responsibilities:
- To operated computer equipment and programs
- To handled language learning materials and assisted students in using the materials
- To created CNN quizzes for EIL (English as an International Language) students
- To tutor EIL students with English pronunciation.
- To create Language Softwares as a Speech Recognition student
The Language Center prepared me to be more familiar with technology and how it can be used to facilitate the language learning experience. Teachers must be more involved with using computer-assisted programs in order to be caught up with the technology revolution that is transforming education. Working at the Language Center helped me to be more comfortable using various software and word processing programs. It also gave me the opportunity to be more familiar with various language learning materials in all its forms: books, video and cassette tapes, software CD programs, telephone listening, sound recordings, and so forth. |
