Bem Vindos! (Welcome!)

"The basic general testing problem with English is to develop tests which are valid and reliable, which have a benefical backwash on teaching (where this is relevant), and which are practical". (Arthur Hughes 1941)

My introduction to you

My passion for learning and education was not the result of a sudden epiphany; rather, it started early and grew steadily over time. Because of my father's job in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I spent much of my childhood watching various South American countries going to the temple in Brazil. This early exposure to various cultures and education systems allowed me to acquire deep insight into the interplay between education and development. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but also to believe strongly in the value of bringing one's expertise to the community in order to enhance society.

In college, I learned about computers and other types of media that can be used to teach and communicate effectively and efficiently. I put my new skills to work as a practice teacher and as a research associate at Brigham Young University Hawaii, where I assisted students and “returned missionaries” with language computer and Web-based surveys. During this period, I also developed my leadership skills. I served as a communication officer for the TESOL Society club and as a Hawaiian TESOL club Webmaster assistant. During my senior year, I was considered very dedicated among my students and professors, and quickly became involved with my sponsor teachers, meeting with them to organizing various class events.

In my Bachelors program in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)at Brigham Young University Hawaii, I focused on: theoretical aspects in applied psychology and linguistics texts, assessment and Testing language under professor Mark James; linguistics, theoretical and practical research studies in phonology, language acquisition and language attrition with the use of statistics softwares (SPSS), including the study of regret analyses under Professor Lynne Hansen; educational methods and practical training, use of technology in educational settings on all the language skills under professors Earl Wyman, Brent Green, Norm Evans, and Perry Christensen. Because of the school's relationship to Brigham Young University in Provo, I had the opportunity to learn about the most advanced technology and the application of selective tools in a range of different contexts.

Upon finishing my graduate school at BYU in Provo I want to accumulate some professional experience and continue to develop the research and writing skills I needed to tackle the challenges of graduate school. I want to pursue my master's degree in TESOL, accumulate some professional experience, and to fulfill my desire of working at Universities. I also want to present proposals that will define the problems of the schools with clear rationale and methods, applying concepts, models, and ideas from class, doing research on competitors schools in the market, and advising knowledge management and e-commerce marketing strategy.

My goal, upon finishing my master's degree, is to obtain an administrative position in a company research organization that maintains a dynamic interaction with other international learning institutions, and I hope to share my experience and expertise by teaching at a university.

I feel confident that upon the conclusion of my graduate school in TESOL I will increase my professional expertise and leadership skills and allow me to ultimately make a concrete and substantial contribution to the future of education wherever I go. I look forward both to its challenges and to the opportunities it will afford me in the years to come.
